About this scholarship

Established in 2014, this Scholarship is to assist Indigenous Australian students who are commencing studies or enrolled in an undergraduate degree in the University of Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. 1. Background a. Established in 2014, this Scholarship is to assist Indigenous Australian students who are commencing studies in any bachelor's degree in The Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. 2. Eligibility a. Applicants must have an unconditional offer of admission or be currently enrolled fulltime in first year in one of the following degrees: I. Bachelor of Applied Science (Exercise and Sport Science) II. Bachelor of Applied Science (Exercise Physiology) III. Bachelor of Science (Health) IV. Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Health) V. Bachelor of Applied Science (Diagnostic Radiography) VI. Bachelor of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy) VII. Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) VIII. Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology). b. Applicants must enrol in a minimum of 24 credit points in their first semester of the degree. c. Applicants must be of an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015 d. If no suitable recipients are identified as eligible under Clause 2.c., the Scholarship may be re-offered in the following year to students who are enrolled in their first year. 3. Selection Criteria a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of: I. academic merit, and II. a personal statement that describes: i. leadership experience, ii. future career goals, and iii. reason(s) for choice of degree. b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of School and Dean of Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health or their nominated delegate(s). Deans Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Undergraduate Scholarship c. If no suitable recipients are identified in the year prior, the Scholarship may be re-offered in following year to students who are enrolled in their first year. 4. Value a. The Scholarship is valued at $6,000 and is tenable for one year only. b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester. c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Head of School and Dean of Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university. d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds. e. No other amount is payable. 5. Termination a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient: I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol, II. commences part-time study without prior approval of the Head of School and Dean of Sydney School of Health Sciences, III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship, VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or VII. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination. b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated. c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or withdraws from the relevant course, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
