About this scholarship
The JHW Birrell Scholarship was estabished as an appeal undertaken with the assistance of Sir Peter Derham and Mr Donald Gibb to create a fund in memory of the late Dr JHW Birrell. The late Dr JHW Birrell OAM ISO MB BS (Melb) LLD Honoris Causa (Monash) FRACP FAMA, was born in 1924 and died in 2003. He was appointed as the Victorian Police Surgeon in 1957, and was a pioneer campaigner for road safety. In 2004 the University, with the assistance of Sir Peter Derham and Mr Donald Gibb, commenced an appeal for a fund in memory of the late Dr Birrell for the purpose of providing an annual scholarship in the field of traffic safety.
