About this scholarship

The University of Sydney Law School and the Cameron family established this Scholarship through contributions from the friends and colleagues of the late Peter Cameron. This Scholarship is to promote further studies in law at the University of Oxford supporting recent Sydney Law School graduates from the Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor. 1. Background a. The University of Sydney Law School and the Cameron family established this Scholarship through contributions from the friends and colleagues of the late Peter Cameron. b. This Scholarship is to promote further studies in law at the University of Oxford supporting recent Sydney Law School graduates from the Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor. 2. Eligibility a. Applicants must be either an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident. b. Applicants must be: I. about to graduate from their Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor at the University of Sydney, or II. have graduated from a Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor from the University of Sydney within the last 5 years. c. The applicant must have applied, or be willing to undertake a Bachelor of Civil Law, or equivalent degree as determined by the Head of School and Dean of the University of Sydney Law School, at the University of Oxford. 3. Selection Criteria a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of: I. academic merit, II. curriculum vitae, and III. a personal statement which demonstrates the applicant’s 1) Community service/engagement, 2) Leadership experience, communication skills, and personal interests, and 3) commitment to applying the learning offered by their degree and how their postgraduate study will contribute to making a positive difference to community, professional and/or legal practice. b. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of a selection committee consisting of the Head of School and Dean of the University of Sydney Law School or their nominated delegate, and at least one other staff member from the School. 4. Value a. The Scholarship is valued at $80,000 and is tenable for one year only. b. The Scholarship value will be paid as a one-off payment upon submission to the University of Sydney Scholarships Office of a proof of enrolment in the Bachelor of Civil Law or equivalent at the University of Oxford and an appropriate College, as endorsed by the Sydney Law School. c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Head of School and Dean of the Sydney Law School, or their nominee. d. The Scholarship is not transferable for another purpose or area of study. e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds. f. No other amount is payable. 5. Ongoing eligibility a. The recipient must remain successfully enrolled in the Bachelor of Civil Laws at the University of Oxford for the one-year period. 6. Termination a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient: I. withdraws from an eligible University of Oxford course or fails to enrol, II. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, III. is awarded an alternative primary scholarship from the University of Sydney for a similar purpose. In such circumstances this scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative scholarship where the alternative scholarship is of higher value, or IV. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination. b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error. c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed. d. If the Scholarship is terminated the University reserves the right to request the recipient a repayment of any scholarship funds at any time during or after the Scholarship period. In addition, by accepting this Scholarship, the student consents to all aspects of any investigation into misconduct in connection with this Scholarship being disclosed by the University to the funding body and/or any relevant professional body.
