About this scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2024 to provide law students who live with a disability, work experience in a legal organisation that will facilitate the student's interest and work in disability-related areas of law within the University of Sydney Law School. This scholarship is intended to support students with disabilities and ideally enable work experience in disability law. The scholarship commemorates the legacies of Professors David Benjafield and Ron McCallum AO. 1. Background a. This scholarship was established in 2024 to provide law students who live with a disability, work experience in a legal organisation that will facilitate the student's interest and work in disability-related areas of law within the University of Sydney Law School. b. This scholarship is intended to support students with disabilities and ideally enable work experience in disability law. The scholarship commemorates the legacies of Professors David Benjafield and Ron McCallum AO. 2. Eligibility a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant being currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or a Juris Doctor (JD) within the University of Sydney Law School. b. Applicant must be registered with Inclusion and Disability Services (IDS) (overseen by the Law School Disability Liaison Officer). c. Applicant must be eligible and willing to enrol in the unit of study LAWS3525/5225 Legal Internship. 3. Selection Criteria a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of: I. academic merit, and II. an Expression of Interest response, including questions on: i. Self-description of the applicant and previous work experience, including any relevant information about interest in and experience with disability and/or disability law; ii. Reasons for applying for the scholarship. b. The scholarship has no separate application process and it will be auto-awarded based on the Selection Criteria 3.a. under the academic merit and expression of interest response. c. The Scholarship will be awarded by Dean and Head of School of the Sydney Law School, or their nominated delegates. 4. Value a. The Scholarship is valued at $5,000 per annum and is tenable for one year. b. The Scholarship value will be paid as one-off payment on receipt of Scholarship Acceptance Form. c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university. d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds. e. No other amount is payable. 5. Termination a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient: I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol, II. commences part-time study without prior approval, III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, V. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave. b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error. c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
